There is nothing incompatible with electrification and freight operations on SMART, it is done all over the world, and even right here in California.
More mouse droppings......? Because, as we all know, EVIL THOMAS must be stopped. Or because, it should be electrified, or even if it was electrified, that would be evil too, since is part of the vast MTC conspiracy/ Or because evil NWP and SMART will cause the end of the world, and NWP freight trains will destroy America, or evil BART will make it wide gauge (which should make mouse happy because it will finally destroy the evil NWP...?), and that would be more of the evil conspiracy, too...... Or whatever, the delusion of the moment will suggest to that fevered brain.....
That being said, about the usual spate of often deliberate disinformation that the word SMART magically generates among the member of the AP Train Haters Club, this seems to be a we bit of a pretty light weight "puff piece", that is both limited in its presentation of actual data, and lacks sufficient detail to draw much of a conclusion, as of yet.
If this can generate and sustain more than 3,000 a day on weekdays, that probably isn't too bad for the level and quality of service they are running. The weekend numbers are not that surprising to me, but since we always look at weekday traffic in our planning myopia, this growing weekend travel demand has caught many systems "off guard".
A few years ago when I suggested building storage tracks east and west of USC or games at the Gahlen or USC Football, I was told that there would be no need for such capacity, since no one uses transit on the weekends. Based upon the planning bias toward "weekday" "rush hour" "peak" failure of our freeway systems. Even though back as far as the 70's we actually had higher weekend traffic counts than weekdays without "rush hour", and now with weekends able to produce "all day" congestion on many corridors. Now try going to a Rams or USC game, on the jammed Expo trains, on the "weekend"m and tell me I was wrong about proposing car storage and staging for special events (like is done with LRT at stadiums all over Germany)?
