An iconic steam locomotive is back in the Poway Midland Railroad barn following installation of a new boiler.

A flatbed truck delivered the 1907 Baldwin engine to the Old Poway Park parking lot Wednesday morning after its trip from a Commerce, California shop where the often-patched old boiler was replaced. Once the engine was placed on the tracks it was pushed into the barn.

Railroad volunteer Chuck Cross said it might take up to two months to train his crews to operate the new boiler and to fine-tune the new equipment.

Hercules Powered Equipment won the $360,500 boiler replacement contract and has been working on it since late January. The cost will be split evenly between the city and the railroad volunteer organization, which has been given 15 years to pay its share.
