I forgot to mention "Hate Week". Back in 70-71 the UTU contract was going to run out a week before they could go on strike. SO, the SP abolished ALL trainmen and fireman agreements. Then they called you to work where they wanted for minimum wage.
As a fireman, I worked a helper and was paid $11.00. Not the $39.00 I should have made. I worked a work train for 16 hours. I was paid straight time for all hours worked, no meals or lodging.
The trainmen really got the shaft. Some of the SLO guys wound up in the valley, one in Dunsmuir. We had switchmen from LA that had never been out of the yard, being called as brakeman or conductors for trains to SLO.
No my friends, the carriers are vicious in the treatment of the rank and file. It was fun watching officers trying to get a train over Cuesta with the helper being run by a roundhouse foreman. Braking in two, etc.
The list goes on. How many of you would just go ahead and work, being paid $2.00 an hour when the contract was a lot higher?
