We have a goodly number of retired folks who live close enough to the Western Railway Museum (aka Rio Vista Junction) who enjoy volunteering in our shop, archives, train operations, etc. Whether you would find it to be a meaningful retirement activity depends on your interests and how you "fit" with the other volunteers. I would spend enough time at a prospective volunteer site to learn enough of the subject matter and culture to find out if moving nearby is a good idea. Because it works for me doesn't mean it would work for you and the other way around.
