Hone Hunter was ringing the CN he stared a relationship with US Tell, who owned the EJ&E at the time. As he saw CREATE turn into the drawn out mess that it is. As he didn't want to wait he ponied up $300 Million and too the EJ&E off US Steel's hands while the other RR's stood by and watched. To this day I am amazed he got it for a song without a bidding war taking place.
The EJ&E should have become a joint property like the IHB or BRC, but sadly there isn't that kind off thinking left in the Class 1 business today. I think the last Class 1 CEO who had a pair was Drew Lewis. He was a better CEO drunk then most others were sober, but sadly his drinking is also what led to his downfall after he left UP. Drew Lewis knew his role in the company and he also was a real advocate for the industry.
