This mechanism reduces the weight of this axle of the truck on the rail underneath it. This increases the weight of the other pair of axles to increase the adhesion of those axles. Those axles have traction motors while the axle connect to this air activated mechanism does not. The mechanism does not lift the wheels off the rail.
At this time only BNSF and FEC are using this apparatus.
