But with Altamont, I-5, Tejon you are following the default, most direct and fastest route and can argue you are adding needed capacity and optimally competing with fossil fuel transport, i.e., autos and airplanes. The environmental impact stays within the confines of an existing corridor that is already permanently damaged.

BTW electric aircraft would really undermine the "green" argument for HSR. Ultimately the most effective and secure place for electric rail, "traction", is urban mass transit: light rail, RER-stadtbahns, interurbans like the South Shore, streetcars.
