As a follow up to the post by "Me" below, Goose Lake Railway on Friday filed documents with the STB to replace Lake Railway as operator on a line of railroad leased from Union Pacific extending from MacArthur through Alturas to Perez. Proposed consummation date of the transaction is November 19, 2017, though the noted departure of Frontier's equipment from the line tends to indicate Goose Lake might be expanding to Perez immediately.

I passed through a very rainy Lakeview yesterday, Goose Lake's leased GP30 was idling outside the enginehouse. Assuming they roll loaded cars downhill onto the newly built track south of the loadout facility, there were twelve perlite loads ready to go and another half dozen or so empty cars at the end of track. I could see several more covered hoppers stashed around the wye, and one covered hopper sat on the main next to the engine house. The only other cars in town were the old bottom dump gondola and the ex-SP bay window caboose the county owns.
