But I did notice one thing the trucks in the image had, side guards. Required in Europe.

Rear guards are required to prevent submarining (and the ensuing decapitations) in rear enders. Remember the guy who was relying on "autopilot" in his Tesla and passed (mostly) under a semi? That was because of no side guards on the truck. Not that his prospects would have been very good in any case.
