Yes indeed, Graham is right. Those side skirts are only there to help manage airflow around and under the trailer. They are as flimsy as the thin plastic and metal strips they are made of. One of our hostlers recently tore up a side skirt on a customer trailer when he didn't lift the trailer high enough to clear the hump in one of our yards.
OTOH, the side skirts might provide enough of a visual target for the self - driving car dealie, to prevent the car from changing lanes under the trailer.
