In the first reports about this accident Weaver was back in the units with a faulty steam generator.

I fired on this same job with this same engineer many times and we were always fully rested leaving SLO. No booze and no sleep on the job. At the meeting point the crew had been on duty less than one hour. Personally, I always believed it was bad timing for the fireman to leave the cab when a meet with 76 was coming up. Serrano was the usual meeting point so it was no surprise.
