The oil column had gasketed joints and the pipes were constant diameter. The Rose could turn about more than one axis, but earlier versions rotated in a plane perpendicular to the track. See various issues of SPH&TS Trainline
The water column spout was tapered and had a wider opening at the column to permit it to be moved around to hit the hole in the tender- many of which had several ports [not really the word I want..] to make spotting of the train less precise. SP provided a concrete block in the ballast that marked a spot for the engineer to aim at.
