Central Pacific existed until 1959 for several legal and financial reasons, including land grants dating to the construction of the First Transcontinental Railroad. Southern Pacific corporate legal was concerned they might have to give back the land, to the extent that they kept the original line around the North side of Great Salt Lake through Promontory, UT. intact ( even with no through traffic and little local traffic ) until the metal demands of World War 2 allowed for scrapping. Some of the salvaged rail reportedly went to Tooele Army Depot.
