A unionized work Force in the United States today is redundant. There is no need. FRA, OSHA, work forces services, FLSA have all solved the labor issues of the 1920’s to 1950’s. In solving the issues, we created a culture of....don’t over work and by all means.... anything you can blame on Safety... well, that makes up for all and any need for quality or quantity of work.
Necessity; the only necessity is the 40 hours on your time card every week. Who cares how or where that money came from. All that matters is ME!!!! (Signed The Unionized never on time American Railroad Worker).
Efficiency; Japan and Switzerland have a Demand for efficiency and accuracy. The operations of their railroad systems is a direct reflection of the work culture of the two countries. Ironic but sad, the on time performance of Amtrak is without a doubt the direct and very accurate picture of the unionized labor force running it. Sad but true folks. You want to fix Amtrak? Fix the culture first. Good luck.
