The Espee AC - 9 Gila Monsters were indeed too big for the tunnels on Donner Pass. When they were re-assigned from Arizona / New Mexico to The Modoc Line, Espee had to route them via Dunsmuir & Klamath Falls enroute to Sparks, NV.
Also, I've never heard or read of the tunnels on Donner Pass being enlarged for the cab - forwards. Rather, the cab - forwards were designed & built to fit through the existing tunnels. The tunnels and snowsheds were enlarged ( in some cases the floors were lowered ) in the early 1960's for autorack and piggyback clearance.
