OK, I'll give you the argument on the coast line, because
I thought we were talking about Donner only. My bad.
As to the AC-9, the dimensions on them were almost exactly
the same as the AC-8 and AC-10 classes.
An employee timetable for the area with special instructions
might tell us more.
For now, I stand with my assertion that they did not want
stack-ahead locomotives of such size in the Donner tunnels
and sheds for the very reasons they came up with the cab
forwards in the first place. That being that such engines
on heavy freight at the usual slow speeds on those grades
in the tunnels and sheds would pose a very serious threat
to the head-end crews from smoke and heat.
