The gripman may have been having some fun. If the track brakes are not fully applied when you go over the crest of the hill the car will run rather freely until the slack in the rope is taken up. This is with the grip fully applied. Usually you are dragged down the hill riding on the brake blocks. That is the smell of burning pine that you smell.
