BNSF Dash-9 exhaust structures?

Lately I have noticed some BNSF Dash-9's that appear to have some sort of a structure built around the exhaust stack. At first I thought it was a hatch that was left open, but I saw another one and it appears to be a metal cube of some sort. Anyone know what it is?
