Re: A different kind of "diamond" down under what gauge?

I kind of thought the "mainline" track looked narrow gauge relative to the clearance, so that makes perfect sense.
I know that Australia once boasted of many gauges, including wide, standard, 42", and even 3 foot. I have seen many photos of dual gauge track there, as well. It is my understanding that most of the mainline east-west, and the newer northern ghan line, and mining lines are standard gauge, but how much is left or still operating of those other systems. I know the remnants of the 3 foot ghan still operate as museum pieces, so that line has been effectively replaced by the modern line.
What about the once extensive broad gauge and 42" gauge lines, have they been converted to standard gauge, or mostly abandoned, or relegated to passenger only types of operations?
I know we've got a Kiwi on here, Chris, who I believe is a driver on that 42" system, are there any Aussie's out there?
