An EMD "Cow and Calf" were both powered units, with only the "Cow" having a cab for the crew including a full control stand, while the "Calf" had a complete prime mover and electrical control system, but no cab. Thus, the "Calf" had to be MU'ed with the "Cow" or any other controlling unit. No way was the "calf" simply a "slug"!
