Many steep streetcar routes in San Francisco once operated by the Market Street Railway. The 7-Haight and 6-Masonic both had their ups and downs along Haight Street; the Masonic hill where the 6-line left Haight Street is also steep.
Or the 21-Hayes, the Union Street line, 24th Street line, etc. The 22-Fillmore had such a steep hill at Broadway that the electric cars terminated there and a counter balance dinky ran the rest of the way to the Marina district. When replaced the the trolley buses, they were routed away from the steepest hill.
There are still many people who remember the White Front CarsŪ of the Market Street Railway.
