As farfetched as it may seem O'Shaughnessy did have a Bernal Cut expansion scheme on the ballot in l917. I know this because I went down to the San Francisco room at the library in the early 1970's and went thru all the ballot measures from the turn of the century forward. The anti arguments were very similar to the ones we hear today.
Of all the mistakes San Francisco and Muni have made over the years dumping the B line ranks up at the top of the worst. Getting a rail line back in is infinitely harder than having one already there. Muni, like the rest of us, tends to follow the path of least resistance. A sad sxample of this is the poorly conceived deep level Central Subway. Geary Street is vastly more important and should take precedence but nobody wants to take on the merchants. Muni probably should have gone ahead with the trolley bus conversion of the #38 that was proposed about 10 years back.
