A southern crossing could accommodate a Caltrain extension connecting to the Capitol Corridor instead of retrograde white elephant BART. Any new BART line of this magnitude, if that were the, ughh, proposal, should be standard gauge driverless.

Real upside of this too would be the end of BART colonization of the Geary corridor, leaving it wide open to SMART access to downtown SF via a shared light rail subway with Muni.
