Various segments of GN's CdA branch were abandoned in the 1950s when they consolidated with MILW's parallel CdA branch. Don't know when the track was removed in the Spokane Valley Mall area (which we just biked to this weekend, 15 miles there, 15 back), but I know the bridge that used to span I-90 where the freeway makes that S-curve just east of Liberty Lake lasted well through the 1980s. Exit I-90 at State Line and go south to the bike trail parking lot. Look west and you see the MILW grade running straight west, while the ex-GN grade curves off to the right and then resumes course west. This is were the connection was made for GN to enter MILW track before crossing the MILW bridge (which still stands, part of the Centennial Trail) over the Spokane River. BNSF uses ex-NP from Hauser Jct. to Post Falls, but uses ex-GN from Post Falls to about a mile east of Hwy 41 junction, then jumps south onto MILW trackage through Huetter to almost Gibbs. Ex-GN track the rest of the way into CdA, plus a stub of ex-UP (SI). A couple pieces of NP are used in Post Falls to switch the plastic hopper loads and Idaho Veneer mill. You can still see traces of the ex-NP east of Post Falls between Seltice Way and the BNSF track (and traces of MILW south of the track) around Dairy Queen. NP's CdA depot is at 3rd and Lakeside, now called the Las Palmitas restaurant.
