Folks,
The new container port planned at Punta Colonet, BC, MX is being put up for bids again.
Punta Colonet is about 180 miles south of San Diego on the Pacific Ocean. What makes
this interesting is that new rail line will be built to connect somewhere with UP's
Sunset route.

Relavant quotes:
Quote:Mexican officials are proposing four possible locations for a border crossing to connect to U.S. railroads: through Mexicali; Yuma, Arizona; the twin border communities of Nogales; and outside Ciudad Juarez, across the border from El Paso, Texas.
Quote:At one point, Nebraska-based Union Pacific Railroad ... [was] considered the leading contenders to build the port ... a spokeswoman for Union Pacific, said yesterday that it was unlikely that the company would join in the bidding process.
When this project was first proposed, Tecate was considered the logical place to build to,
there was also talk of Tijuana-Tecate-Ensenada passenger service. Does anyone have any
documented sources about why this route has been eliminated from consideration? Are there
any plans for passenger service on this new line? Sure would have liked to see double-
stacks through Carrizo Gorge!
