Roger, thanks for explaining the advantage of a ballast deck bridge vs an open deck bridge. The MILW was the absolute MASTER of bridge construction --- in 1909 no less! Almost all of their mainline bridges were ballast deck structures. Many are still standing firm and stout today - 28 years after they saw their last train.
