I am sure the "over speed" was in reference to the air. The OS could have been set too close to the 81 mph or been off a couple miles per hour. It sounds as if the OS went in, making a penalty application dumping the air, either right at the curve or when the lead engine took the scenic route down the other side of the approach, to the freeway.


I figured the penalty application was when the air hoses parted putting the train into emergency.

If it was the engine over speed, it would have nothing to do with the operation at that moment. If a unit trips an over speed, the racks close and the diesel engine, just as an engine, stops. Just like low oil or low water. The train keeps moving until air runs short, etc.
