I had a '72 Mustang with a 351 Cleveland that did the trick chasing the 4449 on the AFT in'75, and then back to Portland in '77 (as well as a lot of other trains). The most exquisite madness was chasing the AFT south out of Klamath Falls--chasers flying two-abreast down the two-lane highway! Later, south of Dunsmuir, chasers crossing the median into the northbound lanes of I-5 to pass or to park on the opposite shoulder. You can imagine what Tehachapi was like! When driven reasonably, that car got something like 21 miles to the gallon. I planned to keep that car forever, but the economy of the early '80s put me and a lot of other rails on the street, and I had to let it go. I got over 250,000 miles out of it, though.
