It has a lot to do with trains as the general drift since the war has been the decline of freight rr's, or at least their percentage of freight transport. Ergo urban rail transit may turn out to be the last bastion of steel wheel on steel rail or at least the most busy.

The underpinning argument for taxing the masses to build more rail transit is if you build it they will come. But in reality what they are really thinking and counting on, evident in spades in exorbitant base tunnels to Palmdale, is there will be so many people someone will have to ride it.
