During the 60s and 70s they ran the 8444 basically for the two Denver railfan clubs. It was nearly on a "this will probably be the last year" basis. I don't think anyone dreamed it would eventually get to the size and scope of today's heritage program. The fair in Spokane and the Railfair in Sacramento were the keys to really putting the steamers on the road on what morphed into today's marathon summer runs around the system.
