In the early 1960's when the two pulp mills opened on the Samoa Peninsula (Crown-Simpson and Louisiana Pacific) many mills invested in rail wood chip loaders. Chips went to the pulp mill as well as export by ship. Many of these line side mills were closing by this time and by 1970 or so, everything came to the pulp mills by truck. All product left these pulp mills by ship. I seem to recall the wood chip car era only lasted about five years. I have no idea how much if any of those loads went anywhere south.
