Re: NWP Question: In and around the 1970's were 50' High Cubes used on the NWP in paper service?
Thank you for all the feedback. Resurrecting this thread for more information.
So far, I am understanding that the line north of MP 90 was restricted to plate C height due to tunnel clearance in and around Cloverdale/ Russian River Canyon.
Though there is some indication here that wood chip cars have been seen on the north end that are excess height.
I am conflicted and want to understand more. After looking in Angelo's recent book on pages 153 and 298 I see chip cars. I'll include a link to the same picture in the book:
Though not the same as a high cube boxcar the third, forth, and fifth cars seem to be excess height cars compared against the roof line of the SD-7's and queens proceeding it. They would be comparable in height. I think they are these "aces": [

Here in lies the conundrum. Angelo describes the picture as a southbound leaving Willits. Which if accurate would mean that it would head through the tunnels approaching Cloverdale and so. Seems like it was possible from the photo, but I also remember watching a Pentrex video of the Cal Northern Cab ride through the Russian River Canyon and seeing the tunnels be tight.
Still searching for photographic evidence of high cubes. I even ordered the Family Trees: Simpson's Centennial Story in hopes of seeing more.
Thank You
