20 years since last NWP trains to Eureka

The recent Northwestern Pacific threads on this board got me pondering something....the last NWP freight train south from Scotia attempted to make Willits sometime in the first week of January 1998, the exact date escapes me now. Rising waters and vanishing roadbed caused that last crew to park its eleven loads of lumber at Island Mountain, and the lumber on those cars was eventually trucked out sometime later after it became apparent to all involved the railcars themselves would not be going anywhere anytime soon.
Bottom line, it has now been officially 20 years since rail service to the region behind California's Redwood Curtain ended. And those eleven empty cars are still sitting at Island Mountain.
