Through the 1980's there were several large fleet contractors hauling logs, lumber and chips in Humboldt County. Wayne Bair, Dutra Trucking, Redwood Construction Company, Schekla. Sierra Pacific and Pacific Lumber had their own fleets.....all gone. North Coast Railroad tried to get in on some log hauling in the 1990's to Schmidtbauer in Eureka with re-purposed flatcars. The big days of railroad logging with Hammond, Simpson and Pacific Lumber are more than 60 years in the past. There are three mills left in Humboldt County, Mendocino Lumber in Scotia and Schidtbauer in Eureka and Korbel. If you see log trucks heading south on 101 or east on 299 they are probably going to mills in Mendocino County or possibly Sierra Pacific in the Valley.
