Extendeing ACE service to Ceres makes alot of sense. Giving service to commuters from Modesto, Ripon and Manteca seems like a logical next step for them. It's too bad that most of the plans require a change of trains at Lathrop. With push pull operations it seems like it would be easy to couple a train onto the back of another or split it off going the other way. The NWP did that back in the old days for trains going onto the Mill Valley branch.
It's also great for the PLA/Niles Canyon Railway that ACEforward is being tabled. I have thought that the focus on Niles Canyon as being a choke point is dumb. How long does it take ACE trains to tranverse Niles Canyon? 15 minutes? It seemed like the best part of the plan was the connection between the old WP and SP tracks in Hayward so that UP freights would switch over to the WP tracks through Niles. That would eliminate most of the freights from the Mulford and Centerville line. Seems like that would be one of the best bangs for the buck.
