Your point on commute ops not doing well by or for freight is well taken. So SMART trashes NCRA-NWP.
But the glories of automated cars: not so fast. The ritchie riches will not want to give their privilege to run red lights and stop signs with impunity so they will lobby to get rid of them in the pursuit of "mobility". Pedestrians SOL. Effing traffic circles. And they will insist on introducing class and money into the game - if you pay extra you get to board first so to speak - go to the head of the line, use special lanes yada yada.
Plus there will be so many more vehicles to accommodate it will be a highway lobby wet dream. Lots of new capacity, like double deck freeways, vast new parking garages, environmental monstrosities like that.
