I was of course very jealous of you guys about that trip. Your account brings back memories of me pumping Harv for a complete blow by blow. Harv and I did ride Inside Gateway train 172 (or was it 178) with a NP SD45 on the point from Vancouver to Bend in 1972. Rode on top of a covered hopper all the way. Never will forget crossing the Crooked River bridge in the gathering darkness, we had been sailing along the almost dark landscape, when wham!!! a large pit of darkness enveloped us as the singing of the bridge members reached our ears. Vertigo began to set in, and then just as quickly, we were on the other side. Slept in our sleeping bags by the roundhouse in Bend, and caught a train for KFalls that morning. What a ride.
