It can take hours in urban areas for the damned coroner to show up, too.
I once worked with the retired head of the CHP from Brown seniots days, on how to reduce traffic congestion from this delay in fatal auto accidents..... He was then in his late eighties, from the "old school" of cops, and he looked at me and said, son, back in my day, they all "died on arrival" at the hospital, without clogging the roads.... He further noted, that since his men weren't doctors, that they weren't really qualified to call it at the scene. So they just kind of put the head or other parts on the stretcher and transported them to the hospital, was how they did it back then......
