I too have successfully run trains in dark territory over Cajon on the cutoff. And, actually we have been running trains for over 175 years In dark territory, and have thousand of accidents and needless deaths over nearly two centuries worldwide to show for it. We put CTC in because it is safer and more efficient on the Cutoff.
Of course, I can also recall at least a dozen times in my career, at speed, in signalized territory, with the signals working, that I've encountered a red because of a misaligned switch, broken rail, or even a train. So, I'm just dumb enough to think that this "new fangled" signal technology was and is actually a pretty good thing.
It is also my best professional opinion, that no passenger train should ever be operated at anything above restricted speed, on any territory, without those protections operating. I say that even if that may somehow reflect negatively on my RR skills. And, hope that I may be forgiven for my lack of "old head" "manhood", in my unwillingness to operate a passenger train in a way that clearly resulted in a preventable accident that clearly endangered the lives of this crew (killed them....) and those passengers.
We don't live in 1918, or 1880, or 1831 anymore, So, we have put in things like ABS signals, and interconnected track circuits to warn us about stupid hazards like broken rails, improperly lined switches, and other trains. We actually have a long history of putting in this kind of "new fangled" technology, because there were so many needless accidents, deaths, and injuries before we did it. We did that because that makes us all safer, and we don't have as many accidents as we used to, because of it.
You may be perfectly content to have us doing things the way we did 100 years ago, and accept the "collateral damage" which we continue to suffer from clearly needless accidents like this one, but I'm not.
These guys were killed and those passenger were seriously injured in a trap that should have never have been allowed to be set, with such a stupid and dangerous practice.
