I'm aware of the assertions that he was impetuous and bombastic but I never saw such behavior. When he was VPO I worked at #1 Market and on a number of occasions had to wake him with very bad news in the middle of the night such as the time a sleeper on #11 caught fire at Gibson in 1982.
The man was focused and, while not the most personable person I've known, he exhibited knowledge, focus and even kindness at times. One time we were travelling to a major shipper to celebrate a service contract that was taking effect right after the Staggers Act. Being a low level staffer I worked to be inconspicuous and was amused to see VP of Sales Joe Neal napping in the back while Mr. Krebs read report after report. We stopped off at Denver for him to meet with DRGW and the plane received a tray of sandwiches. Mr. Krebs went forward and handed them out to us. While that is a relatively minor gesture, it speaks volumes - especially at my next railroad, CR, where old school executives like Don Swanson and Dick Hasselman would never have stooped to such a kindness.
