In the early days of Amtrak, the Super Chief/El Capitan was still pulled by the railroad's fleet of "Warbonnet" F-Units under lease. However, when ATSF pulled the Fs off lease to send them through its CF7 rebuild program at the Cleburne, Texas shops, they substituted F45s from the freight pool, along with F-unit boosters with steam generators, to haul the train until it received Amtrak's first SDP40Fs.
