Actually, the last 20 F-45 " freight " units ( 1920 - 1939, renumbered 5920 - 5939 in the 1970 SFe system renumbering ) were equipped with pass - through steam lines and ( according to some sources ) high - speed gearing, so they could be used as trailing units behind the passenger FP-45's. Remember that Santa Fe only ordered 8 of the FP's.
Santa Fe's love of their big EMD 6 - axle passenger power was a direct influence on Amtrak's purchase of SDP-40-F units in 1973; the first 30 of which would be assigned to Santa Fe passenger trains.
