Yeah, that's what they said to con the public into passing
a quarter cent sales tax for the SMART train. Tons of funding
was available. No problem. Up and running by 2014 for 70 miles.

Oops.

What didn't they tell the public? They were lying regarding how
much it costs to construct a passenger rail line and how much
it costs to operate trains. (SMART can't even hire enough train
crews to operate the train sets they do have.)

$650 million was spent planning, engineering, and constructing the
SMART rail line, according to financial audit reports. This was far
more than anything the backers claimed. And
that was enough (with additional state and federal funding) only to
construct a bit more than half the line. (43 miles/ 70 miles).

And you're thinking Santa Cruz can do it for 1/10th of a cent in
a county with a population about = to Marin's?
