Thanks, everyone, for the info! Those "Valley Malleys" sounded like incredible little engines. Baldwin really had a great design for them, and whatever the SP did did not get in the way of their amazing performance. They sounded like way more than the equivalent of the SW1500s -- in that they cold pull a lot of cars, and could run at a good speed.
I wish I had been a railfan back in the later steam era, so I could have seen -- and heard! -- those incredible little engines hard at work.
It is really, really sad that housing and other building have been put onto prime agricultural land. Nowhere is this sadder than in the Santa Clara Valley, which long ago was called "the Valley of Heart;s Delight". The land was quite fertile, and the "terroir" was incredible i that area.
