Prior to Canadian confederation of Newfoundland in 1949 most rolling stock was built as narrow gauge for or by the railroad. Canadian National took over the railway with confederation and built a re-trucking facility at the Port Aux Basque ferry terminal where mainland rolling stock received narrow gauge trucks for service or delivery on the island. When the rolling stock was returned it was re-trucked for mainland rails. Most all narrow gauge rolling stock was phased out except for some specialized cars. They were replaced with re-trucked mainland cars mostly of the 40 ft. variety.
