Here's a Steve Schmollinger picture of the first run of the San Joaquin. They were numbered 710 Southbound, 711 Northbound.

On a beautiful mid-day in March 1974, a big crowd is on hand at the Stockton Amtrak Depot to witness the inaugural run of San Joaquin service.
Amtrak 417 West, train No. 710, is the first regularly scheduled passenger train through Stockton in years--since the start of Amtrak.
On the point of the first train is an ex-UP E9 and an ex-SP FP7, both equipped with boilers.
The white-washed depot is a gorgeous ex-Santa Fe structure.

I also ran across this slide below on Ebay of the first run at Merced, Ca, March 6, 1974.

Jointed rail, wood ties, old brick platform. I like the old days.
