The use of "single car" TOFC equipment ( one trailer per flatcar ) dates back to the 1930's on the New Haven, and Chicago & Great Western RR's. Two Chicago - area Interurbans, the South Shore and the North Shore, began hauling LCL wagons and containers around the same time.
