Social Security is good; pensions are good. 401k's are a ruse concocted by reaganites and supply siders to kill off guaranteed retirement payments but don't think this scheme is limited to conservatives; putative liberals have bought into privatization, toll roads, outsourcing, yada-yada. American liberals, when it comes to economic issues, are now becoming European style "liberals", aka laissez-faire quasi-libertarians.

In France you have an ex-minister of economics under the previous socialist government now pushing tax cuts, privatization, gutting job for life labor laws and in particular going after the CGT and the other SNCF unions. Plus there you get automatic tickets and fines for speeding detected by roadside radar. Revenue enhancement. All this under an alleged centrist.

$100bil to build so-called HSR on a backwoods freight route that is not even compatible with freight? - naah.
