Railroads used to transport strawberries in head-end cars on passenger trains. No more.
Retired after 27+ years in the produce business, Driscoll has a big presence in Watsonville and Pajaro, California, but the sweetest strawberries were from Agachio (sp} Farms in Watsonville. They grew a salmon-color berry called the Pajaro. Whenever I could order them direct, I would.
We used to say the California strawberry crop began when they were shipped from Anaheim. When I began my career in 1967 strawberries and other crops were seasonal. Now you can get just about anything anytime of the year.
