Black Diamond was originally Nortonville which was a coal mining town in the hills about 35 miles east of San Francisco. [en.wikipedia.org]

There were 4 small towns that served by 3 railroads coming from Pitssburg and Antioch from about 1855 to as late as 1910 depending on waht account you read. The nortonville mines became unprofitable in the late 1800's so they packed it all up on trains and sent it to the new town of Black Diamond near Seattle. Nortonville is now in the East Bay Regional Parks Black Diamond Regional preserve. They have an excellent underground mine museum that has an excellent mine tour option. Highly recommended if you're a mining fan and the museum has a fair amount of railroad information and photos
